Ron
http://blog.limewire.com/posts/32264-album...al-media-group/ Remember that Styx record, Paradise Theater: the concept album named for a legendary Chicago movie theater that was torn down in the ’50s? Well, pretend that you do. It’ll make the fact that George Wright Goes South Pacific was recorded on that theater’s pipe organ seem oddly fascinating. Even more interestingly, Wright’s album was actually recorded in California, where the Paradise’s organ had come into the possession of Hi-Fi Records founder/producer/engineer Richard Vaughan. Organ virtuoso Wright recorded loads of albums for Hi-Fi in the ’50s, some of which met with considerable success. Vaughan remains a cult hero of lounge/bachelor-pad music today, on the strength of albums like this one. It’s an enterprising organist who can take on the grand scale of a score like Rogers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific, but Wright does this iconic piece of American culture proud — not only the well known tunes (”Some Enchanted Evening,” “Happy Talk”) but the lesser-known songs as well, making full use of the pipe organ’s immense possibilities along the way.
