mtlfan
Posted today: Rock Stars Dennis DeYoung and Roger Hodgson Jam Live on Canadian Idol, August 7 and 8 on CTV Updated Tue. Aug. 1 2006 3:04 PM ET -- DeYoung and Hodgson help the Top 7 celebrate classic rock -- Toronto, ON (August 1, 2006) - The Canadian Idol Top 7 will rock out with Dennis DeYoung and Roger Hodgson in next week's tribute to Classic Rock, CTV announced today. DeYoung, former STYX singer, and Hodgson, formerly of Supertramp, are the featured guests as Canadian Idol turns up the amps next Monday, August 7 and Tuesday, August 8 at 8 p.m. ET on CTV (check local listings). The DEP/Universal Music Canada recording artists will appear in segments on Monday night's performance episode as they lead each member of the Canadian Idol Top 7 in rehearsal workshops. Then, on Tuesday's results show, DeYoung and Hodgson will perform live on the Canadian Idol stage before Canada learns the name of the next eliminated competitor. ** Media Note ** - Photography and audio clips from Canadian Idol are available online at the Canadian Idol Media Centre at www.idolpix.ca. "As proven with this week's workshops with Cyndi Lauper, the Idols can benefit enormously from the experience of established artists such as Dennis and Roger," said Susanne Boyce, CTV President of Programming and Chair of the CTV Media Group. "We know they'll bring the rock star out in each of the competitors." "Picture two musical rock geniuses working and performing together for the first time," said Executive Producer John Brunton. "It's going to be outstanding." DeYoung, a founding member of the band STYX, has been a singer, songwriter, keyboardist and producer over four decades. His singing talents have made his voice one of the most recognizable in the world. DeYoung has sung and written such rock classics as: "Lady," "Come Sail Away," "Best of Times," "Mr. Roboto," "Show Me the Way" and the People's Choice Award Winner, "Babe." STYX sold over 35 million albums and scored ten Top Ten singles worldwide. In addition, DeYoung has recorded four solo albums including Desert Moon, whose title track achieved Top Ten status. Currently in stores is the performer's latest project on CD and DVD: Dennis DeYoung and the Music of STYX (Live with Symphony Orchestra). "Being a former high school music teacher, I am thrilled to work with these aspiring young musicians," said DeYoung. Roger Hodgson has been recognized as one of the most gifted composers, songwriters and lyricists of our times. As the signature voice of Supertramp, he gave us "Give a Little Bit," "The Logical Song," "Dreamer," "Take the Long Way Home," "Breakfast In America," "Fools Overture" and so many others that have become the soundtrack for our lives. Hodgson co-founded Supertramp, one of the greatest rock 'n' roll bands ever, in 1969 and was with them for 14 years. He left the band in 1983 to follow his heart, live a simple lifestyle in nature, watch his children grow up and pursue his spiritual values. During the time that Hodgson led the band, Supertramp sold well over 80 million albums. In Canada alone, sales for Crime of the Century and Breakfast in America reached Diamond status. Hodgson is a multi-talented musician, being a keyboardist, guitarist and pianist, who is currently performing solo and orchestra concerts worldwide. He is set to release his first ever solo concert DVD, Take The Long Way Home - Live In Montreal, on August 22 before starting on a Canadian concert tour beginning October 27 through mid-November. For further information, visit www.RogerHodgson.com. "When I was first invited to be a mentor on Canadian Idol, I thought what a wonderful idea - absolutely brilliant," said Hodgson. "I love working with young people that are aspiring artists. Having been around the block a few times, I hope I'll have something to offer them." Note from Amanda: My guess is that it will be the "Idol" musicians that will be backing Dennis and Roger and not Dennis' own band. But we'll see! mtlfan
Okay, two Canadian Idol websites to check out. One with three pics of Dennis at Canadian Idol (first three shots). (Is he wearing the same jacket that he wore under his leather jacket at his last Vermont concert?) http://www.ctv.ca/idol/gen/Photo1.html#latest The "official" media release after the show: http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...006&no_ads= I will be posting my own impressions of last night's show next (which has been taped). Tonight is the results show (half hour long and will be taped) where both he and Hodgson will sing, but I don't know if it will be together or not. mtlfan
So. As far as my own impressions of the show itself, it wasn't as good as the one last week, with the exception that Dennis was there. I was disappointed with the fact that most of the contestants either picked what I would consider "pop" songs, or made rock songs sound like pop. But that is my own personal opinion. That being said, the last 7 are all good singers, but two of the guys really are not rock singers and do better with other types of songs. One of the guys has a beautiful mature rock voice for such a young lad of 20 though. The three girls did exceptionally well. I wouldn't want the job of trying to pick just one. During the show, pre-taped segments of Dennis and Roger working individually with the contestants was shown. We only see a small part of each workshop due to time constraints, but Dennis and Roger seemed focussed and relaxed. At first, I was wondering why Dennis was so subdued. But then I realized that one, guys are like that when they're working and two, the show is all about the Idols and it's their time to shine, not the guests'. Dennis and Roger will have their chance to shine on tonight's show. The influence that they had on the contestants was much more subtle than on last week's show. Cyndi Lauper worked on helping the contestants outwardly express their wilder side (i.e. stage presence) while Dennis and Roger worked on reaching inside and accessing all that creativity and emotion and transferring it to their singing and/or songwriting. They really did look like proud papas watching the show. We'll see what tonight brings!
ladybugking
They really did look like proud papas watching the show. We'll see what tonight brings! Hey, thanks for the re-cap, Amanda. Sounds like it is done very much like American Idol in every way. I am really happy for Dennis to get that exposure. Trust me, there are Canadian Idol fans down here, too, who either share video clips, or get to watch CTV in some fashion. All of them who watched got to see Dennis last night! mtlfan
Okay, next recap! Today's show was only a half hour long, but had MUCH more of Dennis and Roger. They both took their turns playing for approx. one minute at the beginning of the show but then they each got a turn to play a three song medley. Roger went first. Dennis next. Dennis was wearing the same cool shirt that he wore at Taste of Chicago - the one where pics were posted - jeans and very white sneakers. The one minute at the beginning was "Babe" while backed up by the Idols. The medley was "Lady", "Mr. Roboto" and "Come Sail Away". All songs were great except for Mr. Roboto sandwiched in between. I think it may have been because of time constraints or the fact that he didn't have his regular backup singers, but the way the song was rearranged and cut into pieces here and there left no melodic continuation. But "Come Sail Away" fixed all that and he had the audience singing along! At the end of the show, Ben Mulrooney (the host of the show) had both Dennis and Roger front and center on the stage to thank them both. I have a suspicion that the one BRIGHT spotlight that Canadian Idol has at center stage was bothering Dennis but that he was trying not to let it show because his behaviour was different that what we normally see at concerts. Poor fella. Plus, he had to push his earpiece back in twice in a timeframe of 6 minutes! But he got such a warm reception and a standing ovation so I'm sure he's forgiven us technically challenged Canadians. :-) One of the male Idols was eliminated tonight, but not one that I expected. This guy can actually sing. He'll do okay in the future, but I would have considered him a serious contender for the title. In any case, I leave you for this evening. I would guess the stage lighting you mention may well have caused Dennis a bit more difficulty than the production staff may have been aware of. mtlfan
Pictures from last night's show. A must see! http://www.ctv.ca/idol/gen/Photo1.html#latest Shawn, if you look at the 9th picture (just before the pics of the Idols start up), you'll see a pic of Dennis, Roger and Ben. They're standing in center stage accepting their thank yous. If you look at the expression on Dennis' face, you'll see what I'm talking about. Poor fella. Good pictures otherwise!
