I haven't watched it yet because I'm afraid that it's going to spoil my little musical honeymoon with a band I just got into! So, just wanting to know, is it vicious? Is it incorrect? I read all these things about how Killroy was disastrous but all I remember from '83 was how everyone loved Mr. Roboto and thought Styx was super cool. So, how did this rewriting of Styxtory happen? Was Caught in the Act really disastrous? I got the DVD from ebay - someone burned their VHS of it - and loved watching it, i thought it was perfectly 1983/4, and it really took me back to what I loved about music at that time when I first started listening to the radio at 12 years old. ladybugking Posted May 18, 2005 Report Share Posted May 18, 2005 (edited) I don't know if you have seen any other VH1 Behind the Music's but you must remember, they were trying to do entertainment first and then fit facts to make the program entertaining. In the case of Styx, you didn't have a wild bunch of drinking and drugging band members, so they had to use another angle. They decided they needed a "villain." Three guesses whom they chose. They also had an agenda and, again, cut, edited, and worked the "facts" to fit their agenda. Keep all that in mind as you watch. I have heard all sides to the reactions to this program, but won't share them here. It was the second highest rated Behind the Music ever shown. Watch it for some of the archival footage and interesting pictures they show. THAT part I enjoyed very much. Some of the band history was also interesting. Do not expect anything near a fair look at the situation in general and Dennis in particular. That said, every single band member hated this show. Any others have thoughts here?? Ron Posted May 18, 2005 Report Share Posted May 18, 2005 You hit it pretty good Kathy. Remeber that BTM is not Gospel in any way shape or form. Facts and statements were twisted to meet their agenda. Editing can be such a talent, I guess. Also keep in mind that the show was recorded shortly after Styx hit the road and left Dennis high and dry, which was probably the worst time to record such a show. Imagine being married for almost 30 years, then start going through the process of a nasty divorce. Then, before the divorce is settled, imagine someone shoving a camera in your face, and asking you how your marriage was and what went wrong...etc.. with only their own interest (entertainment on behalf of your misfortunes) being a priority. The band was in the middle of some serious difficulties (to put it mildly). I, like Kathy, do not want to influence your opinion one way or another. There are some who felt the Kilroy album and subsequent tour "destroyed" the band. There were so many factors at play during that time period that also had a large influence on the band. After you watch the episode, should you have comments, or questions, bring them on. Many here have their own perosnal opinion of it good and bad. Just as fans of the current lineup do. In a nutshell, you can take just about any piece of information and mold it to prove/disprove your point. This episode was no different. It went for sensationalism. good luck in watching it. I dunno, kinda cute in a so bad it's good kind of way. Thanks for being helpful about VH1 BTM, I'll watch it and make up my own mind! Of course I shall post my reactions right here. I can't think of much else to add except that the first time I saw it, I was spitting nails by the end! But then, Dennis has always been my favorite! Very sad. It would be nice to see the director's cut, hopefully someday. I would watch the BTM dvd and go back into time. Everyone was right with what they posted above.
