mendelstyx
I'd be interested in hearing about the explanation of the origin of Castle Walls and the meaning behind the song. Anyone care to share? Dennis please come to Georgia!!! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Dennis tells a story of the band (Styx) being in New York. the movie the Exorcist was playing. Band members at this point roomed together while on the road. Chuck and Dennis were sharing a room. The band went to see the movie. When they came back to the hotel...Dennis said Chuck asked to sleep with the light on!He says the movie inspired him to write the 'scary/spooky" song. He adds, from time to time, the part about later on, being on the band's plane where a band member...no names, cough Tommy Shaw, cough, was dating...Linda Blair. Dennis looks over and expects her to roll her eyes into her head. A very cute story, however I think it's just some fun he has telling the audience that one. Listening to Castle Walls ( a personal favorite of mine), I'd never get the Exorcist from it. Liz
ladybugking
Listening to Castle Walls ( a personal favorite of mine), I'd never get the Exorcist from it. Me either, Liz! It has always had a very medieval feel for me. I have always thought in the age of video, which came so much later than the release of The Grand Illusion, what a COOL video could have been made for this song. It is so interesting how many people list Castle Walls as one of the very best Dennis ever wrote and one of the best Styx songs ever. I never get tired of it. Kathy <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Most of ya'll know how I feel 'bout this song--it's AWESOME!!! I think I actually cried the first time I heard DDY do it live. It may be the only song I like to see from the other side of the stage (away from the keyboards). I like to watch Kyle on the drums on this one--puts me in mind of a magician mixing potions watching him! OK, so maybe the tone of the song has something to do with it And Kathy, I have to agree, what a wonderful video this song would have made! ladybugking
OK, not to belabor the point, but to belabor it.... My first ever DDY concert was Milwaukee Theater, which seems like a lifetime ago! Anyway, I remember during Castle Walls, during the musical break for it, Dennis turned his back to the audience, spread out his arms, slowly raising them, and then his fingers and the white backlight made a sort of halo around him and through his fingers. It was just amazing! I will NEVER forget that moment and hearing that song I had loved since 1977 live in concert. OK, I am done with Castle Walls.....for now. Wonderful concert all the way around. Done with Castle Walls...BAH!!!! you cannot be done with such a great song. Seriously, the song works very well in concert...add I really think the children's choir adds something...though I fully realize they cannot always be present.
