Uhm. Well. All I would be able to add to the mashup would be songs from Desert Moon since I own no JY album and have only Tommy's last solo effort, which I have forgotten the name of already. Can I stretch that to include all of the solo albums from that era? Here's what I would choose from those albums to make a Styx album: Back then it would have had sides, so I'll sequence this in sides. Side One: Don't Wait For Heroes Dangerous Game Desert Moon The Outsider Something to Remember You By Side Two: Are You Ready For Me Black Wall Nature of the Beast What a Way to Go Kiss Me Hello As a side note, I actually like both "Harry's Hands" and "Outside Looking In Again" better than "What a Way to Go," but I put it on there because I thought it would be a more likely single choice. In fact I wish it HAD been the single choice from 'Boomchild'. Sterling There are some songs Dennis wrote (and, of course, sang) that I consider near perfection. "Outside Looking in Again" is one of those. I am certain it came from the heart, which made it particularly good. Sterling You guys might think I suck....but I've never actually owned or played a single album out of Dennis's solo career until 100 Years from Now came out. :-O The other stuff just seemed too slow or mushy for me. At least the stuff played on the radio was. I like his Progressive side the best.....like he was with Styx in the 1970s. 100 Years from Now TOTALLY blew my mind though when I first heard it.......so Styx-like it was eerie. Also why I love that album. Thus, here is my question: Knowing the side of his music I tend to like the best.....if there were other songs from his solo career I have not heard BUT SHOULD hear.....what are they? Sounds perhaps like the song Sterling mentioned here might be one of them. Please advise:) Thank you!! Ron Posted July 30, 2010 Author Report Share Posted July 30, 2010 His solo work he tried NOT to sound like Styx, and no one was doing anything like the progressive sound of the 70's during the time when he recorded them, so you're not going to find that big "in your face" sound from "The Grand Illusion". A lot of the songs he did during this period could be considered dark; or definitely a lot darker than his previous work. Outside Looking In is a perfect example of this, but it works and is an excellent song. The same with Black Wall. I would say check out Don't Wait For Heroes and Boomchild (the song), as they are probably the closest examples you will get to the progressive sound; possibly Gravity as well. There are 30 second clips of all of Dennis' songs here on the site, so you could get an idea of what his other solo work sounds like. Look them up in the discography section. Hmmmm I think I might have to cheat a little and use James Young Group instead of solo (sorry). You might be able to tell from this that Back to the World was one of my more favorite solo works, and while Desert Moon was the most commercial, both Back to the World and Boomchild rank ahead of it in my own playlist.
