Chicago Guy
We hear all the time that it's to expensive to make a new CD , it's not worth it because it won't get airplay . Why then is Tommy Shaw recording a new CD with Jack Blades and recording a Bluegrass CD this year?

Why then is Tommy Shaw recording a new CD with Jack Blades and recording a Bluegrass CD this year? Interesting question... Could be Tommy just loves writing and creating... and he might as well try to make some money off the output. And he probably enjoys working with an equal writing talent like Jack Blades. Something he lost once Dennis was out.
Chicago Guy
I'm sure Tommy loves to write , that's what musicians do . Then why doesn't Styx do a new CD? That's what confuses me.......... Edited January 25, 2010 by Chicago Guy
ladybugking
I may have part of an answer here. In another thread, we already touched on Styx probably not having a record deal and all that would be involved in getting a new Styx album out there. Tommy and Jack have a contract from the company that released Influence to do a second album, again of covers. No originals, from what I gather. I believe that has been mentioned in some interviews from TS and or JB or both. As to the bluegrass thing, I have a feeling there is a bit of collaboration involved. Just a guess, but I doubt it is a solo Tommy Shaw project. We will have to see about this one. I am quite sure there is new music from all parties involved in Current Styx, but no impetus to release it as a full CD.

Why then is Tommy Shaw recording a new CD with Jack Blades and recording a Bluegrass CD this year? My take on this is that it is JY's viewpoint on the matter and it may not be the same for TS. I don't think that TS has spoken out about the matter. Also, the more people you have involved in the project the more money has to be put into it, therefore the album has to do well to get everyone paid. The band stands to make allot more by touring then recording a new album. I'm sure that most "non-hardcore" fans of the current band called Styx could care less about an album of new material. I also heard a rumor that since JY's fall off the stage, he has forgotten how to write music.

That's what confuses me.......... My point is, he needs someone his equal... JY aint it IMO... Larry... eh... ... If Glenn had stayed... theres a good writer.. I think the Bug (ladybug) stated some other good info... I do recall another thread on this issue... with a walmart option and alot of other stuff... I guess the answer really is... for me anyway... who cares ... and that just may be the problem...

Yea in mulling it over, I really think it is no one cares anymore... I consider myself one of Styx's biggest fans dating back to the mid 70's... And I have to admit the magic is all but gone... I can remeber going to concerts back in the late 70's early 80's and I was wired from beginning to end (no not the artificial kind... well... sometimes...). And now if Styx played down the street from me I prob wouldnt go... Now, I also have to admit the last Dennis concert I went to I really enjoyed... but the energy was subdued... I can compare it to going to see Dennis's first show as a solo artist post 1999 in chicago... yea drove from Jersey... in February... to Chicago... 6th row... AMAZING concert... the whole place was wired... But over the years, Big D is getting older and IMO he was kinda dialing it in (2009 show)... he was really tired by the end... to be expected considering his age and ailment (the light thing)... But in the end... The time of Styx and its cast is fading as far as the rock side... I do however think Dennis has many years ahead in writing for theater and for other artists... And Tommy is a legit talent in writing... and his move to a bluegrass style could extend his career as well... just some brain droppings on my part.... (in honor of George Carlin) I can see and agree with the points you made here. Even though we may not like or want things to end, they do. I am going to see DDY at the end of February, it will be interesting to see how that show goes. You sometimes go to these things expecting it to be like it was in the past but, that can be unrealistic. I am just happy to be able to. Let's face it, the odds that DDY would have just stopped touring when he was pushed out of Styx was really high. So, I just hope to see him as much as possible while he still is out there.
