Set list complaints

A lot of us would like to see a more diverse set list when Dennis performs, but yet he sticks to the same old thing. Why? Because that is what the majority of people want to hear. Don't believe it? Well, read the following excerpt from a blog:

Friday night, we went to B.B. King's in Times Square to see Dennis DeYoung, formerly of Styx, perform with an acoustic trio that included Glen Burtnik (formerly of both Styx and REO Speedwagon) and Jeff Watson (formerly of Night Ranger). It's the third time that we've seen a "nostalgia" act there, the previous were Toto and Air Supply, and having seen Styx twice without DeYoung in the line-up, this was just done to complete the cycle. Two complaints: in between the perfunctory "Babe", "Lady" and "Come Sail Away" were just too darn many cuts from the new album. I realize you need to pimp it, but that doesn't mean the audience actually wants to HEAR it.

I didn't realize that only two songs from the new CD counted as too many.

That is were the problem is for the die hard fan. The majority of people attending the concerts are the casual fan.

Hello,

This blogger sounds as though he'd be just as happy listening to a Dennis impersonator or a Styx tribute band. Real fans of Dennis, as we have shown, want to hear the stuff off the new album and his solo work. Look, I've seen DDY four times since 2004 and the best show I ever saw was the Morristown, NJ gig with Glen. The one where they started with "We Can Work It Out" and did some of the Son of Edge songs and solo stuff and a song from the musical, etc. It was diverse and, like I said, the best of the shows I've seen. My favorite thing DDY does live is "Desert Moon" anyway (with that long guitar ending). Call me weird. I haven't seen him since he started doing the shows that have included new music off the album, but would love to hear "Save Me" and "This Time Next Year" live. And these acoustic shows sound like they're off the hook, but anything Denny does with Glenny is good with me.

Take care,

Todd

The problem there is, "real fans" aren't sufficent to fill venues.

Most people that pony up the cash to see someone like Dennis (or Styx for that matter) have a pretty specific expectation about what they're going to see. Whether us "real fans" like it or not, the artist had better deliver. Or the dates will be few and far between.

There was a comedian a while back, I think, who had a line about this: Q- What are the six most dreaded words you can hear at a Classic Rock concert? A- Here's something from the new album.

I agree.

I've always thought there is enough of the classic songs and the new/other stuff to satisfy both types of fans at a DDY concert. He says in interviews that his past IS his present when he performs.

I actually don't like Dennis' hits too much....either with Styx or solo. I like the album tracks BY FAR the best. Every Styx album I can think of....my favorite songs were always album tracks. Dennis' best hits as far as I am concerned, if I had to pick a hit, would be:

Lady

Come Sail Away

Grand Illusion, if this is considered one of his "hits"

Best of Times

Mr Roboto (I can't stand Kilroy was here....except for THIS song)

The rest of his hits are too slow. I still like his voice, regardless of the song, and his keyboards. Never heard anyone play keyboards the way he does. He's OUTSTANDING to listen to.

One thing Dennis has done very successfully is incorporate some of the deeper album cuts that weren't necessarily hit singles or even that well-known such as Castle Walls and Pieces of Eight. Both of these songs have been widely accepted by the casual fans as well because they are simply great songs.

Some Styx fans object to "Desert Moon", but that song was a big solo hit and resonates with a LOT of people. (Go read the really nice comments about it on YouTube.)

I feel that one or two songs from the new CD might find their way into his set on a semi-permanent basis simply because they are great songs and I am pretty sure there are fans who want to hear the familiar that might respond to those songs as well.
