Hi ! Mr. Gowan .

Now that you have been with Styx for 10 years , is it still as exciting or is it getting to the point were it's becoming stagnant doing pretty much the same setlist without creating much new material ?

Report MessageHi John,

It is still a challenge to elevate the show to the level it now stands, therefore the excitement continues.

Each gig is another opportunity to get it right !

We have a considerable amount of new material ( as yet unreleased ) that occupies much of our time off-stage.

All the best and I'll see you somewhere up the road.

Cheers, Gowan

Geez, that reply reads like a form letter. Were you expecting to hear something different?

After all, he's not in charge, just a hired gun. Maybe TS or JY would have a different answer? NOT! =))

Uhm. Ok.

Each gig is another opportunity to get it right !

If that has not happened by now, maybe it's not gonna??

Might have added: Unreleased because there is no record label as of now.

Keep 'em spinning, Gow. Best, though, if you keep the "singing" to a minimum, youknowwhatI'msayin'?

Kathy,

I took a brief listen to a few of the tracks off of Cyclorama, as well as "I am the Walrus"

Gowan has an awful voice. Just awful. This is not just my loyalty to Dennis talking, either....this Gowan guy can't sing. How any Styx fan manages to stomach this dude's poor imitation of Dennis on Dennis' songs is beyond me. I couldn't do it.

Great reply BTW. I think Gowan's reply, while not meant to be insulting, could easily be taken as insulting to fans like me who remember the real Styx. Oh well.

Still hangin' on to that pipe dream:)

In fairness to Gowan, I do not believe he is attempting to imitate DDY. In fact, I believe he has mentioned in interviews that he has no intention of doing so and that's not what they hired him to do. That being said I think that band could have made a different choice for a new vocalist. I think his voice is OK for his own material, such as "criminal mind". Additionally, I think that it's difficult for some long time fans of DDY to be comfortable with someone else singing his material.

Kathy, you have said it all! :)

In fairness to Gowan, he is doing what he was hired to do. His style is his own, and I am one who is not crazy about it. It was jarring seeing his somewhat clownlike behavior onstage in place of Dennis and, of course, his strangle of a voice.

But. I do feel he is doing his job and he seems to be a very likable guy in every way.

I am simply not of a mind to see Current Styx in this incarnation no matter how much they just "can't stop rockin' ". Dennis is being far more adventuresome onstage and off with his creativity going full tilt right now.

So have you actually seen "the new Styx" in concert? If so, what did you think of it?

I know Gowan is not attempting to imitate Dennis, per se, but the fact is, he is the one who ends up being called upon to sing the songs Dennis wrote, with the possible exception of Lorelei and Queen of Spades (JY co-wrote, and I know he sings Lorelei in concert....how awful must THAT be??)

I went to see them once. It was just after the split in '99. The show was entertaining but, I didn't enjoy it as much as previous Styx concerts. It seemed to me that the current line up was on a mission to just play louder and faster then before. In regards to Gowan's performance, he did alright. It appeared to me that he was more focused on being a goof on stage and showing you how well he could jump over his keyboard rig and spin it around. I also felt that he did not do much justice to the keyboard parts of the music. I didn't see what all the rave was about him being a better keyboardist then DDY. So my overall impression was I could take them or leave them. From that point on I have never and will never go out of my way to see them.

Have only seen the videos and a few television appearances. More than enough to know I have no desire to see them live.

I never saw the real Styx live either, but one viewing of Caught in the Act or Return to Paradise lets one realize what Dennis brought to this group. There. Is. No. Substitute.

I saw them as well. My sister and I went to Vegas in 99 and saw them 2 nights in a row... I think... my god its been ten years!!!

But anyway, one was the first show where Chuck showed up after his majot battle with HIV/AIDS. So I was happy to see he was doing better. The Dennis songs they did were difficult... they did Babe, with Gowan... omg if any of them looked at me they saw an unpleasant look on my face... he sounded AWEFUL doing it... but in general the Tommy stuff was good... JY screeched out miss america and Lorilie... and like Boomchild said.. it was like watching a circus act with Gowan...

I have not seen them again since... and wont... I do wish them all happiness... but I'm just no longer interested in thier product...
