One Hundred Years From Now (Rounder)

When I was an elementary school kid, I’d ride to and from soccer practice in my parents’ Suburu station wagon where I distinctly recall hearing larger-than-life radio ads for Styx’s Kilroy Was Here album and feeling the leg muscles tighten behind my shin guard pads. Styx was the shiznit and the enhanced, booming advertising voice and accompanying music snippets swirled through my 8-year-old mind like a hit from a hookah. Twenty-eight years have passed since those advertisements shot over the radio waves, but listening to former Styx vocalist/keyboardist Dennis DeYoung’s new material, the passage of time seems as inconsequential as what place my soccer team held that season. His new solo disc, One Hundred Years From Now, gives the impression that 1983 is still here, complete with powerhouse vocals, meaty guitar solos, soaring melodies, rhyming dictionary-enhanced lyrics and everything that made arena-rock acts like Foreigner, Journey and Styx so enjoyable. The dozen songs dished out for the recording drift from full-blown rockers like “Rain” to classic heartstring-tugging AC radio fare such as “There Was A Time” and memorable mid-tempo popdom as evidenced by the well crafted “Save Me.” At the end of the 12-song auditory trip, you’ll swear that some mullet-donning engineer cleaned out his storage unit, unearthed an unreleased Styx album under a mice feces-covered pile of dust, and released it to a classic rock-buying public. Styx fans, closet and otherwise, can now celebrate like a rotund redneck at a Twinkie convention.

Nice... a positive review... As a life long Styx fan I'm always shocked when the critics give a good review... But then when I think about it... the original FANS of Styx are all grown up now and writing these reviews... in a way, we have won by attrition
