mtlfan
Okay I'm back. It was a great concert, but not one of Dennis' best. Poor Dennis. Right from the first note, I could tell something was off. His voice was still there but it didn't sound as powerful as normal - it sounded like the sound guy didn't have Dennis' mike turned up as loud as usual. The usual plexiglass wall wasn't in front of the drums and the band was louder than usual. But later on in the concert, Dennis apologized because he had been suffering from laryngitis all week and that his voice wasn't at its best but he'd try to get through the next few songs for us. He then said he actually had to cancel Thursday's show in Jonquiere because of the laryngitis (http://www.cyberpresse.ca/article/20080627/CPACTUALITES/806270479/5204/CPARTS - this article is in French). (There actually an article in Trois Rivieres local paper about Friday's show but it's not available on the internet. I just found a pic of the newspaper cover for the weekend edition - http://www.cyberpresse.ca/article/20080627...mp;template=une. I'm not sure if he cancelled his show on Saturday night. I got the impression from that festival's website that he was only slotted for an hour. If I were in his shoes I'd cancel and go home.) That being said, he really did an admirable job! He held that 40 second note in SMB and that's the second to last song in the Canadian setlist! But in the second hour of the show, you could see that his laryngitis was taking it's toll on him. He asked Suzanne to get his jacket for him when she was introduced after Babe and he would chew on some throat lozenges in between songs and/or musical solos and spit them out before his cue to sing. He was a real trouper, he did everything he normally does but it just seemed as if the spark wasn't in his eyes ... He did seem to take it it stride though. There was one note that he sort of stopped prematurely because of his throat and he just smiled at us, took a deep breath, and finished the last two seconds of the note. :-) Four hours after the concert my ears were still ringing and that has never happened to me at a previous DDY concert - the sound is usually too well managed - but with Dennis' voice the way it was, the band was that much louder. But otherwise, anyone who hadn't seen him 9 times before wouldn't have noticed anything was wrong. I hope he's doing better now, poor thing. NOW - because he had to rest his voice, the three (yes, I said THREE) guitarists got to do their little "guitar duel" thing. Stephane Dufour was on stage with Jimmy and Tommy. Well, twist my rubber arm to listen to some more guitars!!! After the three guys had their fun, Hank comes in and does his thing on bass, shrugs as if to say, well, that's it for me and goes back to his mike. LOL! Dennis was on the tamborine for most of the duel. Three guitarists gets complicated sometimes though - Dennis stopped the first attempt at Rockin' the Paradise because of feedback and made everyone start again. The feedback must have been on the monitors because I didn't hear anything, but I'm not a professional musican either! But a funny thng happened during that song that almost made me fall out of my chair - both Jimmy and Tommy share a mike to sing backup during that song - but Jimmy was coming at the mike one way and Tommy another and somehow their guitar necks/string keys/whatever got hooked into each other and they had to somehow keep playing, get unhooked and then try to sing, but they were laughing so hard they couldn't get the words out! LOL! Pure slapstick. For 100 Years From Now, Dennis introduced a Quebec singer who's name I didn't catch and who was not familiar to the folks who were sitting around me. So if anyone recognizes him from the pics, please let us know. He was a really good singer. During the last song, Dennis just let him sing a couple of verses. Whoever he is, he's pretty smooth. As a side note, at first I really wasn't planning to go to the concert because the weather had been calling for heavy rain and thunderstorms and anything else that could be thrown in. But Friday afternoon the weather report changed so around 4 p.m. I decided to take a chance and hopped into my car and headed down there. It's an hour and a half away from Montreal. I figured I'd be waaay at the back by the time I got there. I went in and there were actually chairs set up on the left side of the stage for $5.00 each. Too easy. I paid my $5.00 and waltzed myself right to the front of the stage in front of Tommy, Jimmy and Stephane side of the stage - my favorite side! :-) I had to pinch myself! There were about 4,500 people there and the pollen was flying like crazy. As soon as I figure out how to shrink the two other .avi's that I have, I'll upload them and you'll see what looks like snow flying around. Oh yeah, he didn't play This Time Next Year but chose Piece of Eight instead. Yeah!!! By the way the people of Trois Rivieres are really, really, really nice and a heck of a lot of fun. Oh, and Molson Dry beer isn't that great, no matter what their promotion budget is like .... Lastly, I've uploaded three vids from the show, they're in the downloads section. I'm sure my old brain has forgotten something so if I remember anything else, I'll edit my post for y'all. :-) Edited June 30, 2008 by mtlfan

All on stage at the same show? (Or were the Glen pix from a different show?) I cannot even imagine how great this show was. Looking forward to the review! For every one good shot, I've got two bad ones. :-( I've got to practice action shots a bit more with my new camera. :-) You actually did not see correctly, the pics of Glen were from a show last year. The last shot of that concert is the one with Jimmy, Tommy and Stephane together, just before the shot of Markir and I. It was a treat to have three guitarists! mtlfan
Lastly, I've uploaded three vids from the show, they're in the downloads section. How do you guys get a screenshot out of your vids? If someone can point me to the right direction, I'd be glad to add some. Never mind, found it! ladybugking
Thanks for the review, Amanda. Glad he had all that help on stage. Sounded like he needed it! I hope his voice makes a strong comeback because there is much singing for him ahead!
