Gravity
Kathy sez: (Folks, if you are ever in Chicago, you gotta see the HOB. Just to look at all the funky art they have everywhere!) Yeah, but make sure you bring plenty of one dollar bills for the bathroom attendants who hand you paper towels! I never expected that at a place like HOB! Ron
Yeah, but make sure you bring plenty of one dollar bills for the bathroom attendants who hand you paper towels! I am usually a generous tipper, especially when I receive good service (which is what T.I.P.S. is all about--To Insure Prompt Service). I could never bring myself to tip a bathroom attendent when I expect a restroom to be clean. The same thing with those tip cups at Dunkin' Donuts and other places that expect tips just for doing their job--not anything special  Ron (off soap box now)

In many respects, I found HOB to be one scam after another, but that's the way it goes, I guess. I would only go there for Dennis, that's for sure! mrstromboli
You know, Shawn, you could have stuck your shoes to the ceiling and no one would have thought twice about it. You know...."look, more shoe ceiling art!" Don't give my husband Rick any ideas! LOL Let's just say, I have *numerous* pairs of shoes and let it go at that. <G>
ladybugking
As to the tipping topic. I have read that this is becoming more and more of a problem in just such places as the House of Blues. And it is more in-your-face than anyone would want it to be. One should have a choice without feeling "guilty" about it. I agree with you, Ron. There is a place for tips, and doughnut counters and restroom washrooms are not where I think they should be. <_> Ladybug/Kathy
teesa_66
OK, so here's my $0.02 (finally). This is really LONG—continue at your own risk! Let me start by saying I had so many reservations about attending this show, it being Easter weekend at the top of the list. But, I finally decided that this was probably one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities that I just couldn't pass up, so I decided to keep the tix & not feel bad about being away from my family. Truly one of the smarter moves I've made in my lifetime! By the time we got into Chicago, though, I just knew things were going to be super. I mean we made the 5.5-6.0 hour trip in 4.5 hours and that was with me driving in the SLOW lane! In fact we got there so early we had to kill 2 hours before we could check into our hotel. Then, as we were getting ready to go to HOB, we found the Louisville-West Virginia game on television, which really didn't look like a positive thing seeing as how Louisville was down nearly 20 points  But we continued listening to the game while we drove into Chicago (we stayed south in Lansing IL) and proceeded to get lost trying to find HOB. Who knew the Cards would only be 6 points down when we got to HOB? The valet had to practically pry me out of the car! Well, I was supposed to touch base with Laurie, Liz, Kathy, Marianne, Shawn & Jan when we got to HOB for dinner, but....well, as soon as I saw that the TVs in the bar had the game on, sorry girls, but I have most definitely succumbed to that annual disease, "March Madness", and we gave up our reserved table to eat in the bar & watch the game. It was very difficult to eat to say the least what with all the hoopin', hollerin', & occasional screamin' going on. We even had some guys buying us beer! (which, being the DD, I passed on.) It WAS an awesome game but once the show started, I was like Game? What Game? This was truly one amazing show! I was completely blown away! This marks my 11th Dennis solo show, but only the second time I’ve seen him with just the band. I have to say, I'd be hard pressed to pick my favorite show, but this is definitely in the top 2! Since the set list has already been posted (thanks Laurie!), I'm just going to comment on some of the individual songs. First off, like Laurie, I've always been kind of luke-warm about "Best Thing" but seeing it live was just awesome! There sure is a lot of energy packed into that song. "Desert Moon" really had my heart this show; it nearly brought me to tears this time around. The line "first love never runs dry" was especially meaningful to me this time around as my baby brother (OK, so he's 36), well, he just got engaged last week...to his high school sweetheart! I'm definitely going to suggest this song for their reception! I was thrilled that "Pieces of Eight" was included at this show. I was surprised that the "Hall of the Mountain King" interlude was included. I'd just assumed it would be omitted since this wasn't an orchestra show. Boy, am I glad I was wrong about that! I have to admit that this is probably my favorite classical piece-rock song combo that Dennis does. The energy that builds in this song could power a small city--maybe even a big one! Intermission was wonderful as well. See there was this HOB employee working the crowd throughout the show selling beer, which I pretty much ignored during the show. But when she came through at intermission calling out "cold beer!" I told her she should be selling water instead. To which she responded that she could bring us water--all we had to do was ask. I think Liz & Shawn will agree, that was the best water we’ve ever had! The second set opened with Tommy D and an amazing guitar solo leading into “Rockin’ the Paradise”. A great way to open the second half! Then we were treated to “Queen of Spades” which was spectacular! As I said to Liz, seeing this show, how can anyone pick just ONE favorite?! I was thrilled to hear this live! When Dennis started talking about this song probably being the ultimate “lost” treasure, I knew he had to be talking about “Unfinished Song.” I practically held my breath during this intro and was touched that his brother-in-law was actually there for this. It seemed the crowd had a lower enthusiasm for the song, but I would imagine that many there had never even heard the song before. So even though it was really an OLD song, for many it was probably very new. I, for one, will always treasure hearing this song performed live. It will always remain a favorite of mine, among the top of my DDY "Top 10" list. OK, I had 3 different people give me times on “the” note in “Suite Madame Blue”—all 3 of them different: 21, 23, & 26 seconds. Since the ‘23’ was from someone with a watch, I guess we’ll go with it. Either way, it never ceases to amaze me the control Dennis shows on this note! “Borrowed Time” as a ‘blues shuffle’ took some getting used to, but it was very fun nonetheless! I was particularly thrilled to get the second encore. I’ve heard others talk of seeing these Jerry Lee songs performed by Dennis et al, and I’ve heard it on 1 or 2 radio appearances, but it was great to see them out there just having fun. What a great way to end an A-mazing show! The audience was great! While I don’t think it was a sell-out, it had to have been close. Many more people & the beer gal wouldn’t have been able to weave her way through the crowd. For the most part, it was like one big karaoke party with everyone singing along on nearly every song. Let me say too, that, while I know it was a bit uncomfortable to be on our feet for nearly 5 hours, I think being vertical really contributed to the energy of the show. Sitting through most of the show, as has been the case at most of the orchestra shows I’ve attended, well, I think that saps the energy from the audience. In a theater, we’re more spectators than the participants we were Saturday night. I didn’t realize how much I’d missed that level of involvement. Dennis and the rest of the band really were in fine form Saturday night. It was so great to see them really enjoying it too. Seeing Dennis at the keys more was great as well, even if I was too close to actually watch him play. Everyone looked great (even if it seemed they were ALL in black) and appeared to be having a good time. I certainly hope so! I know it’s a night I won’t soon forget! Terri P.S. let me go on & apologize to my Illinois friends now. I hope we can remain friends after the Cards win Saturday!
