Read a snippet in Rolling Stone that the Def Leppard, Styx, Foreigner tour was the tour with the fewest original members. Only 1 original lead singer and a total of 5 original members for all the bands.

Not totally true ! Joe Elliot is the orignal singer of course and 3 of the other guys in Def Leppard are orignal members (4) . Styx has one 2 orignals and both sing (2) . Foreigner only one orignal Mick Jones ........ (1) For total of 7 orignal members and at least 2 oringnal lead vocalist ......

Actually 2 of the 5 that started DL have left...Pete Willis left the band and was replaced and Steve Clark died. That leaves 3 original.

They may not be be counting Tommy as original with Styx. JY they may not be counting as a lead singer, but do count as an original member; and Chuck they may not count because he doesn't play the whole show and doesn't always tour full-time. All of which I guess can be debated.

...Rolling Stone never did like STYX.

Def Leppard History

1977 - 1979

Rick Savage (bass), Pete Willis (guitars) and Tony Kenning (drums), formed the band "Atomic Mass" in 1977 as students at Tapton School in Sheffield. Joe Elliott auditioned for a spot as their guitarist following a chance meeting with Willis. However, during Elliott's audition, it was decided that he was better suited for the role of lead singer.

Soon afterwards, they adopted the name "Deaf Leopard" (which Elliott had thought of in his school days). At the suggestion of Tony Kenning, the name "Deaf Leopard" was slightly modified to Def Leppard in order to avoid comparison to punk bands, and perhaps also as an indirect homage to Led Zeppelin's similarly styled band name.

While perfecting their sound as a band in spoon factory, the band added another guitarist Steve Clark in January 1978. Tony Kenning suddenly left the band in November 1978 prior to recording sessions for a three-song EP in late 1978. He was replaced for those sessions by Frank Noon on what was known as the Def Leppard EP.

Sales for the EP soared soon after the track "Rocks Off" was given extensive airtime by renowned BBC Radio DJ John Peel, considered at the time to be a champion of punk rock and new wave music. 15-year-old Rick Allen joined the band as its full-time drummer towards the end of November 1978.

One of those, "what was actually the original band" kind of debates. Tommy Shaw was definitely not an original member of Styx. 5 albums were recorded without him, all under the name Styx.

If they do count Chuck, then the "original" Styx members would be two who tour with the band now.

Def Leppard is a bit confusing, but I guess one would have to count from the days they actually became Def Leppard and recorded an album. And on that I am still confused.

Foreigner is easy. One guy.

Aren't there a few touring acts with NO original members? I think there are a few out there using the name but not the original singers/musicians.

Yes, but there is a difference between say hiring a replacement to sing someone's songs versus hiring a replacement who goes on to write his own songs on (including songs on 4 multi-platinum albums in a row). So technically Tommy was not an original member but he was a member when they were at their peak and that is what counts.

No argument there. But the RS comment was in reference to original members. Tommy Shaw was not an original member of Styx.

Oh. And I remembered the name of one band touring with no original members. The Little River Band.
